What is the Driver Insurance certificate?
Driver insurance is a social insurance program for drivers and other employees, it is a social security plan established in Law 428 approved on May 15, 1950. With the firm intention of protecting drivers and other employees who are requested or permitted by their employers drive a motor vehicle, within the performance of the work activities of their position as an employee and all those drivers; who work on their own account in the authorized public transport service.
They are excluded from this law
- Administrators, executives and professionals, as defined by the Puerto Rico Minimum Wage Board.
- Federal Government employees.
- Insured persons who have received a bonus as provided in Article 6 of the Puerto Rico Driver Insurance Law.
How to apply?
If you wish to apply for driver insurance, you must take into account that to manage income and enjoy the benefits of driver social insurance, at the time a worker is hired to provide transportation services of any type; a membership must be registered through the Driver Insurance Certificate.

Procedure to apply for the Driver Insurance Certificate
- First, you must call any of the authorized offices to confirm the names and residence address of the applicant. It is important to note that this call can be made by the employee's employer, his or her spouse, a close friend, a family member, or the applicant himself.
- Once the application for benefits has been made along with the explanation for which said benefits are requested, all the information and documentation necessary to proceed with the decision must be taken to one of the offices of the Department of Labor.

It is important to keep in mind that regardless of the situation or the deal you have with the company, the corresponding procedures must be carried out to obtain the Driver Certificate, since you cannot obtain your driver insurance online.

Amount that the employer must pay
The driver who is his own employer, you have to pay a quote of 0.80¢ dollar, weekly for each week or fraction of it worked.
Amount that the employer must finance
Every employer has the obligation to pay the sum of 0.30¢ of a dollar, for each week or fraction of weeks worked by each employee who is covered by Law and discount 0.50¢ of a dollar to each of its employees.

Disease
A sickness pension will be granted to the insured, for any physical or mental condition that prevents them from carrying out their work, that is drive a motor vehicle. This includes inability to work caused by or related to a pregnancy and childbirth, said pension will be paid weekly based on a scale of benefits according to the weeks contributed.
- Maximum $60.00
- Minimum $16.00.
Inability
Total and/or permanent disability is considered to be the before 65 years of age or any illness, injury or condition that has as a consequence; the permanent incapacity of the insured to drive motor vehicles. The benefit is a lump sum payment on a sliding scale basis.
- Maximum $3,600.00
- Minimum $360.00.
Bonus
The insured who has reached 65 years of age or older, you will be entitled to a single bonus payment upon retirement, on a sliding scale basis.
- Maximum $360.00
- Minimum $180.00.

Death of insured
Upon the death of any insured person, the beneficiaries who depend for their total or partial subsistence, of what the insured earned at the time of death, in a single payment on a sliding scale.
- Maximum $6,000.00
- Minimum $800.00.
Death of spouse
It will be granted to the insured a single payment of $800.00 dollars, to help cover expenses incurred due to the death of the spouse.
Death of children
It will be granted to the insured a single payment of $500.00 dollars, to help cover expenses incurred due to the death of a child with ages between six (6) to fifteen (15) years and a payment of $300.00 dollars, when the child is under six (6) years.
Death of the insured without dependents
A single payment is granted up to a maximum of $ 600.00 dollars, to the person who incurred the expenses for the insured's funeral services.
Who can sign up for Driver Insurance?
All natural person authorized by law, to drive motor vehicles that carry a driving license:
- Motorcycle.
- As a driver or as
- Heavy vehicle driver
In addition, those who drive usually and regularly as part of their job, but not casually or sporadically, a motor vehicle through any form of compensation; whether obtained based on percentage, combination of salaries and other facilities or services.
Or the person who operates a motor vehicle traveling on public roads, roads or private properties; as part of their occupation or way of earning their livelihood. It also applies to the person who owns a motor vehicle, but who uses it with the authorization of the Law. public transport service of people, animals or things and conducts it to provide any of the aforementioned public services.
